Nearly 500 people took to the streets of Cotia on Saturday (3) to remind that "Aging with dignity is everyone's right." That was the theme of the Elderly Persons Walk, promoted by the Municipal Department of Social Development, together with the Municipal Council for the Rights of Elderly Persons (CMDPI).
Although elderly persons were the main audience, the walk brought together participants of different ages, reinforcing the intergenerational character of the initiative. The proposal was to promote coexistence between generations and broaden awareness that valuing, respecting and guaranteeing the rights of elderly persons is a commitment of the whole society.
People with disabilities also took part in the activity, including people with physical, intellectual, hearing and visual disabilities, some using canes, crutches and wheelchairs.
The gathering took place at Praça da Matriz de Cotia, in the city center. Before the start, professionals from the Municipal Department of Social Development and the Instituto Paulus led a warm-up and preparation session for the participants.
After the warm-up, the group set off on a walk along a route of approximately 2.3 kilometers, toward Avenida Professor Manoel José Pedroso. Along the way, participants had a support point at Parque Bahia, with water distribution.
Throughout the route, the municipal secretary of Social Development, Celso Itiki, also spoke with representatives of local businesses about the importance of guaranteeing elderly persons dignified and respectful service in commercial establishments and services in the city.
The walk ended in the parking lot in front of Cotia City Hall, on Avenida Professor Manoel José Pedroso.
The event was supported by the Municipal Departments of Communication, Health, Transport and Mobility, Public Security and Sports, as well as the Military Police and the Parish of Nossa Senhora do Monte Serrate, which provided space for the gathering of participants. Partner institutions that carry out actions aimed at elderly persons in the municipality also took part, such as Instituto Paulus, ASSA, Atitude de Amor and Associação Rejuvenescer.
The Elderly Persons Walk was part of the actions carried out in the municipality to draw attention to the rights, appreciation and protagonism of the elderly population, as well as to encourage coexistence, inclusion and aging with dignity.
