In Cotia, 15,961 elderly people are registered in the Unified Social Assistance System (SUAS). Of this total, 59% are women and 41% are men. This Thursday (1st), when International Day of Older Persons is celebrated, the City of Cotia highlights the network of services, programs, projects and activities aimed at this population.
Through the Municipal Department of Social Development, the social assistance network and partnerships with civil society organizations, actions are developed that seek to contribute to quality of life, autonomy, socialization and active and healthy aging.
Among the initiatives is Acqua Sênior, which offers water aerobics activities in Caucaia do Alto and serves 100 people. The Social Assistance Reference Centers (CRAS) and the Elderly Persons Community Center of Caucaia do Alto also promote activities aimed at well-being and coexistence.
The network also includes actions developed in partnership with institutions such as Paulus, ASSA, Associação Rejuvenescer and Atitude de Amor, expanding opportunities for participation and socialization of elderly people.
The program offered includes activities such as yoga, crafts and ballroom dancing, as well as knitting, crochet, loom and ribbon embroidery workshops. The initiatives provide opportunities for learning, movement, expression and social integration.
Talent and exchange of experiences
Another initiative is the Shared Talents Program, developed by the Municipal Council for the Rights of the Elderly (CMDPI). The program values the knowledge, experiences and skills of elderly people and promotes the exchange of knowledge between different generations.
The proposal is to create opportunities for talents developed throughout life to be shared, strengthening the protagonism of the Elderly Person and their participation in the community.
Council works to defend rights
The Municipal Council for the Rights of the Elderly (CMDPI) is a space for participation and social control that works to defend rights and strengthen public policies aimed at the elderly population.
Ordinary meetings take place every third Tuesday of each month, at 2 pm, at the Municipal Department of Social Development, located at Avenida Benedito Isaac Pires, No. 35, 4th floor.
The meetings are open to society's participation, which can follow and contribute to discussions on policies and actions aimed at elderly people in the municipality.
Walk promotes mobilization and awareness
Among the actions carried out annually is the Elderly Persons Walk, which takes place this Saturday (3rd) and brings together public authorities, the Municipal Council for the Rights of the Elderly, institutions, professionals and the community.
Intergenerational in nature, the walk seeks to raise society's awareness of the importance of respect and appreciation for the Elderly Person, combat age-related prejudice and strengthen the defense of the rights of this population.
More than encouraging physical activity, the initiative proposes a reflection on aging and reinforces that aging is part of life and should happen with dignity, respect, autonomy and social participation.
Violence against the Elderly Person must be reported
The protection of elderly people also depends on the attention of society as a whole. Situations of violence or violation of rights can be reported by calling 100, the national channel for reporting human rights violations.
Cases of physical, psychological or sexual violence, negligence, abandonment, financial or property violence, among other rights violations, can be reported.
International Day of Older Persons
The International Day of Older Persons was established by the United Nations (UN) in 1990 and is celebrated on October 1st. The date draws attention to the rights, participation and contribution of elderly people to society, in addition to encouraging reflection on the challenges related to population aging.
