Around 500 Classroom Assistants from the Cotia municipal school system took part in another round of continuing education promoted by the Municipal Department of Education. The meeting focused on serving Special Education students and addressed strategies for managing challenging behaviors in the school environment.
This was the third training session held with these professionals, both tenured and contracted, who work directly in the students' daily lives and play an important support role during school activities.
Among the topics covered were positive behavior support, the role of the support professional, the importance of the Classroom Assistant as a reference for students, and strategies for dealing with different behaviors in the school routine.
The training was led by teacher and researcher Luciana Angelis (photo), who holds a PhD in Human Development Sciences and in Developmental Disorders from Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie.
The proposal, according to the Department of Education, is to offer professionals knowledge and tools that can be applied in practice, inside the classroom, contributing to more appropriate service for each student's needs.
The training is part of a permanent policy of qualification for professionals in the school system, especially those who closely follow the students' routine and can apply the knowledge acquired directly to situations experienced in the school environment.
Currently, the Cotia municipal school system has 1,574 Special Education students, enrolled from daycare through Elementary School II and in Youth and Adult Education (EJA).
